Les intraduisibles des trois monothéismes

Dans une société mondialisée où s'affrontent les fondamentalismes, l'une des tâches essentielles est de compliquer l'universel, loin de tout dogmatisme et de tout conflit des valeurs. Un bon moyen de le faire est de lire ensemble les textes sacrés des trois monothéismes, en prêtant toute attention aux langues dans lesquelles ils sont écrits, aux mots les plus déterminants.

Chaque mois, des spécialistes des langues et des religions, du judaïsme, du christianisme et de l’islam, se réunissent en séminaire autour de Barbara Cassin à l’Institut du Monde Arabe. Ils tentent de comprendre ce que chaque monothéisme a de singulier, et qui le rend parfois « bizarre » aux yeux des autres. Autrement dit : intraduisible.

Ce travail donnera lieu à la publication, chez Le Robert et Flammarion, d’un Dictionnaire des intraduisibles des trois monothéismes.

Présentation des intervenants 

Barbara Cassin est philosophe et philologue, médaillée d’or du CNRS et membre de l'Académie française. Elle est notamment l’autrice de : Eloge de la traduction (Fayard, 2016) et Vocabulaire européen des philosophies. Dictionnaire des intraduisibles (Seuil - Le Robert, 2004 ; 2ème éd. augmentée, 2019).

David Lemler est spécialiste de la pensée juive médiévale, maître de conférences à Sorbonne Université et membre du Laboratoire d'Etudes sur les Monothéismes. Il est notamment l’auteur de : Création du monde et limites du langage : sur l'art d'écrire des philosophes juifs médiévaux (Vrin, 2020).

Philippe Capelle-Dumont est docteur en philosophie et en théologie, doyen honoraire de la faculté de philosophie de l’Institut Catholique de Paris. Il a récemment publié : Philosopher en islam et en christianisme (avec Souleymane Bachir Diagne, Cerf, 2016,) et Le catholicisme contemporain en péril. Ces questions essentielles qu’il lui faut affronter (Artège, 2022).

Souleymane Bachir Diagne est philosophe, spécialiste de la philosophie islamique, et professeur à l’Université de Columbia. Il est entre autres l’auteur de : 100 mots pour dire l’Islam (Maisonneuve et Larose, 2002) et De langue à langue. L’hospitalité de la traduction (Albin Michel, 2022).

 

The untranslatable words of the three monotheistic religions

In a globalised society where fundamentalism clashes with one another, one of the most essential tasks is to make the universe more complex, far from all the dogmas and all the conflicts of values.

A good way to do this is to read together the sacred texts of the three monotheistic religions and to give all attention to the languages in which they are written, to the most crucial words.

Every month, specialists in languages and religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam come together in a research class around Barbara Cassin at the institute of the Arabic world.

They try to understand the particular special feature every monotheistic religion has and which are sometimes in the eyes of others “strange”; Or to say: untranslatable

This work resulted in the publication by Le Robert and Flammarion of a Dictionary of the untranslatable of the three monotheistic religions.

Presentation of the participants

Barbara Cassin is philosopher and philologist, she received the gold medal of CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) and is member of the French Academy. She is among other things writer of: Laudatory to translation (Fayard, 2016) and European vocabulary of philosophies. Dictionary of the untranslatable words (Seuil-Le Robert, 2004; 2-the expanded edition, 2019).

David Lemler is specialized in medieval Jewish thought, senior lecturer at the Sorbonne University and member of the science lab of studying the monotheistic religions. He is author of: Creations of the world and the limits of language; about the art of writing by the Jewish medieval philosophers (Vrin,2020).

Philippe Capelle-Dumont is doctor in philosophy and in theology, honorary dean of the faculty of the Catholic Institute of Paris. Soulymane Bachir Diagne is philosopher, specialist in Islamic philosophy, and professor at the university of Colombia. He is for example author of:100 words to explain Islam (Maisonneuve and Larose, 2002) and From language to language. The hospitality of translation (Albin Michel, 2022)
